Are you between 10-14 and like to have a go at Canoe Slalom?

A Melbourne Based AIS Talent Identification Project

www.rapidlytolondonandbeyond.paddle.org.au

Attention all canoeists!

Canoe slalom is an exciting and dynamic sport that requires athletes to test themselves against nature. Out on the river, you need speed, agility and plenty of guts. A race consists of 2 runs down a rapid on a river, with the fastest time (both runs combined) being the winner. On the rapid, each competitor must negotiate between 18 and 25 gates, with time penalties being incurred for touches or for missing a gate.

Melbourne has just received funding for a two year talent development project from the AIS. The initial phase is about to start and we are looking for applications from 10-14 year olds who may or may not have tried canoeing before.

What we are offering you:

  • The opportunity to become involved in an exciting and dynamic water sport.
  • Quality coaching (at least 10 weeks worth) from some of AustraliaÕs very best slalom athletes. This may be extended to 2 years worth of coaching.
  • The use of kayaking equipment
  • Access to races and development camps

What we are looking for:

  • 10-14 year olds who are fit and optimistic
  • Kids who are at a state level or better in another sport
  • Kids who have confidence in and around water
  • Kids who have good marks at school

What commitment is expected:

  • Attend training twice a week at the Bulleen Sporting fields for 10 weeks (starting in October)
  • Attend the Victorian TID camp in November at the Goulburn River
  • Attend the Victorian Championships in early December at the Goulburn River

Where to from here?

  • Go to www.rapidlytolondonandbeyond.paddle.org.au and apply online before Friday 29 September.
  • By 4th October, you will be emailed or contacted by phone with details regarding the selection day, Saturday 7th October. It is expected that the selection be done at the Victorian Institute of Sport and will take about 2_ hours to complete.
  • In the week following the selection day, you will be contacted to inform you whether or not you have a place in the final TID squad. Even if you are not selected, there will be opportunities for you to become involved in the sport.
