The Marathon Committee are eager to see increased participation at competitions and continue the encouragement of those who are “regulars” at races.  The committee have discussed options to achieve these goals, and are proposing the following changes to the 2015 competition program. The modifications aim to provide a more engaging racing experience for paddlers, however no one can do this alone and we need your support and involvement to deliver the racing program you want.

Key changes for 2015

1) Long lap format

Most Winter Series races will be run over a long lap (~8 km) or out-and-back format. The international short lap format will be retained for the Victorian Championships for consistency with Nationals and Worlds

2) More race variety

We shall have some new race locations and course layouts so that races aren’t the same old same old each year

3) More compact race schedule

Races will now start at 10:00 am so that they take up only half a day, not a whole day, giving paddlers time to do other things in the afternoon

4) Some races on Saturday afternoons

Country races in particular will now generally be scheduled for Saturday afternoon, giving city paddlers the opportunity to drive up and back in one day if they wish. There will also be the opportunity of a social paddle on Sunday morning for those staying over to experience different water

5) User selected race distances

With the longer lap format most races will now offer two or three distances (typically 8, 16 and 24 km). Paddlers will be able to select the distance they wish to paddle, rather than be set a distance based on ranking

6) Improved communication

A dedicated communications position will assist in promoting events and keeping paddlers informed.

The Marathon Committee continues to encourage greater involvement by all members of the paddling community, including expanding participation by equipment vendors and encouraging clubs, schools and training groups to bring tents and signage, etc. to create a sense of occasion at race events.

Thank you

The committee thanks all those who have contributed ideas to the proposed changes and looks forward to further feedback from interested parties. We take this opportunity to thank the many volunteers for their contribution during 2014 and their ongoing assistance, without which these events could not be held.
