Do you know someone with an inspiring story of sporting talent to share?

Nominations are now open for the 2019 Leader Local Sports Stars program and we want to celebrate Paddling’s fantastic stories of sporting achievement.

The Leader Community News are holding Local Sports Stars for over 40 years now, which have showcased the next generation of Australian sporting talent, their tales of courage and the volunteers who make it all possible. Previous winners include Shane Warne, Michael Klim, Matt Welsh and Cadel Evans.

What can you win?

Winners will share in a Victorian prize pool valued at $19,600. But Local Sports Stars is about so much more than prizes. In 2019, The Leader Community News want to publish as many individual stories as possible across Leader Community News publications, leadernews.com.au, localsportstars.com.au and social media.

What are the award categories?

Junior Sports Star: athletes aged 18 or under (as at August 31, 2019) competing at a state level or above, that demonstrate the greatest achievement, dedication, fairness and sportsmanship.

26 publication awards + 1 x overall state award to be won

Senior Sports Star: athletes over 18 years (as at August 31, 2019) competing at a state level or above, that demonstrate the greatest achievement, dedication, fairness and sportsmanship.

26 publication awards + 1 x overall state award to be won

Team of Excellence: open age category award is for a team (maximum 20 people to one team) judgest to have exhibited the greatest achievement, dedication, fairness and sportsmanship. 1x state winner

Service to sport: an individual club member or volunteer of a sporting organisation in their local community who shows the greatest level of passion, determination and impact of contribution. No age restriction. 1x state winner.

Jim Dowsley Inspire Award: open age category to an athlete who shows exceptional courage to excel in their sport. Having dealt with an injury, obstacle or a situation that puts them against the odds, the award is in honour of the late Jim Dowsley who founded the Leader Local Sports Star program. 1 x state winner.
