Bendigo Friendly Sprints and Short Course Marathon Saturday 28th November
On Saturday 28 November, Lake Weeroona turned on great conditions for over 70 paddlers and coaches, officials and families.
The event is usually held with the Cup but this year was postponed 6 weeks. This enabled Melbourne paddlers and the nearly formed BCC junior squad to be involved.
We were very pleased to have Paddle Vic Short Course Marathon at the event. This added, to the diversity of paddlers and reminded us of the 80s when these events were very popular. The racing catered for all age groups, it was fast, busy but importantly fun.
Many of us remember in Victoria when we had a Vic Institute of Sport high performance program (where the top paddlers would go to regattas to support development. These regattas would have long distance races in the program. Back then, there was a great crossover with the sprint/marathon paddlers, the sprint guys would do long distance events and the marathoners would use the sprints to sharpen up.
Now, sprint canoeing in Victoria is very much in the building phase.
Highlights of the day
• Good numbers considering that there were 4 other canoeing events on the same day
• Very good representation of girls and women in all age groups
• Lots of juniors (and others) new to sprinting
• Some knelling C1s in action
• The short course was well supported and the portage pontoon worked well.
