Victorians McGrath and Leverett set for World Games – Marathon Event

Victorians Mick Leverett and Kate McGrath from Footscray Canoe Club head to Columbia this week to represent Australia at the World Games.

'Our preparation for the world games has been great. In icy Melbourne, the chill has not deterred some great training partners at Footscray Canoe Club from helping us prepare.

'We’ve concentrated our training around the format of the World Games. On the 1st of August, we will race in the K1 event which will be run on a small lake with 7 laps of a 1.7km loop, portaging on each lap. For each category there will be 2 semi finals. The first 4 boats from each semi final and the boats among the rest which have the best 2 times go to the final that will be run in the afternoon.' – Kate McGrath

Hot competition for McGrath will come in the form of Renata Csay (HUN) who will be looking to repeat her gold medal winning performance from the 2012 World Championships in Rome. In the men's, Ben Brown (GBR) will be one to watch; marathon World Champion in 2010 and showing good form in fourth place at the European championships earlier this year.

Mick Leverett took 5th place at the World Championships last year, and is keen to paddle on to the podium this year after winning his 15th national title in K1 earlier this year.
