Geoff Young – In Memoriam

It is with great sadness that Canoeing Victoria loses another valued member.

Geoff Young was the epitome of the clubman which every sporting club would feel proud to have as a member. Geoff first became involved with the Patterson Lakes Canoe Club in 1999 as a parent with the Woodleigh School. Geoff was a person of many skills but a significant contribution was made during the construction and fitting out of the Patterson Lakes clubrooms. Yet, his efforts did not cease there. Along with his wife Doona and daughter, they raised considerable funds with raffles and other money raising ventures to support the in its efforts to raise the money to pay for the clubrooms.

Many of us who attended Patterson Lakes races over the years have savoured and appreciated Geoff's culinary skils and gourmet food. There always seemed to be plenty on offer and everyone was satisfied. Geoff and family were always there early to help set up for events. His aim for the club was to see that all its endeavours were represntative of a successful club. In 2000 Geoff was honored by the Patterson Lakes club as its Most Valuable Clubmember. Geoff further supported the club when he took on the role of Club Secretary in 2004.

In 2005, Geoff voluteered his time, skills and materials to assist the Victorian Marathon Team to build racks in the container to hold kayaks so they were safe and secure on the journey to Perth for the National Championships .These efforts was greatly appreciated by th teammembers and team management.
Geoff was the type of volunteer all clubs and associations strive to have to keep our sport viable.

Tragically, Geoff Young lost his life in a truck/train collision at Somerville on Wed 23rd August. Our deepest to Doona and the family.
